An Overwhelming Majority want the Catholic Church to STFU about birth control

President Obama’s birth control rule initially mandated that employers provide health insurance plans which would include coverage for birth control exempting religious employers but not institutions, which of course sparked an uproar (or possibly a deflection). Catholic approval for the President has remained unchanged. 95% of Catholics use contraceptives….

FYI: Erections are Insured but the ongoing outrage over birth control Continues

Republicans have stated that the President’s mandate to provide health insurance coverage for birth control, is not part of an ongoing war against woman. Let’s delve into this. More than half of Viagra prescriptions were afforded health care insurance weeks after entering the U.S. market in 1998 yet women had to pay for birth control. It wasn’t until 20o2 that New York became the 20th state requiring that insurers and employers provide contraceptive coverage.

Jon Stewart mocks Santorum’s hypocrisy in contraception spat | The Raw Story

Returning from his vacation, Jon Stewart on Monday analyzed the controversy surrounding new U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations on contraceptives. Catholic bishops have accused Obama of waging a war on religion because of a White House plan to require most insurance plans to cover birth control. “Yes, we are men of God, that money must not be used for contraception,” Stewart said, mocking the bishops. “That money has been set aside for [...]

GOP Continues To Oppose Contraception Coverage Plan Now Supported By Large Catholic Institutions

The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops almost immediately rejected a compromise on requiring contraception coverage that the Obama administration announced on Friday, and Republicans have continued to attack the accommodation. Under the compromise, religious institutions will not be required to provide contraceptive coverage because insurers will provide contraception directly to employees at no cost, completely removing [...]

Ryan calls contraception coverage an ‘accounting gimmick’ | The Raw Story

House Budget Committee Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Sunday said that the Obama’s administration move to accommodate the Catholic Church’s concerns about covering contraception for women was just an “accounting trick.” The White House said last week that it would change proposed rules requiring religious hospitals and universities to cover birth control, instead mandating that insurance companies provide those services. “This thing is a distinction without a difference,” Ryan told ABC’s George Stephanopolous. “It’s an accounting [...]

Michael F. Cannon – The Church of Universal Coverage

An OWS protester recently spray-painted a health care message on the doors of a local Kaiser Health office. Unfortunately, the money and time this genius spent vandalizing other people’s property are resources that could have gone toward, say, buying him health insurance. Or providing a flu shot to a senior citizen. This genius has also forced Kaiser Permanente to divert resources away from healing the sick. Kaiser now has to spend money on a pressure washer and whatever else one uses to remove graffiti from those surfaces (e.g., water, labor).

Catholic League to Obama: ‘He must think Catholics are stupid’

It appears President Barack Obama’s attempt to calm the storm over his policy of forcing even religious organizations to pay for contraceptives has failed to work.

The President stated on Friday that he would not force church-run organizations to pay for contraceptives for its employees. However, he said the insurance companies the organizations use to provide health benefits would still have to offer it free of charge to any employee of the organization who wanted it.

Senate Republicans seek to make joblessness worse with forced ‘volunteer’ work

“This proposal is very much about ‘welfarizing’ federal unemployment insurance benefits,” said George Wentworth, a senior staff attorney with the National Employment Law Project, a worker advocacy group. Wentworth noted that the bill borrows language from the 1996 welfare law.

That is, it reframes unemployment insurance as something other than an insurance program that exists for all of us and that we work for. Second, such measures simply punish and stigmatize people for being jobless at a time when there simply are not jobs in the economy for them.

The people who disparage “populism” either have a self-interest in damping down popular comprehension of just who has been wrecking the economy, or they are supporters of a perverse austerity agenda, or they worry that Obama’s “populism”, more consistently applied, just might work. As for class warfare, it’s here. The policies of the past three decades, whether on taxes, de-regulation, outsourcing, the assault on unions, or the deliberate weakening of social insurance, have been top-down class warfare. The only thing wrong with Obama’s populism is that it took him until nearly the year of his re-election to practice it resolutely. More, please.
